Sharon Schuler is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and was born and raised in the Presbyterian Church. She received her BA degree from Auburn University and worked for a development company for many years. She is an ordained Deacon, Elder, and Commissioned Lay Pastor in addition to becoming a Minister of Word and Sacrament (Teaching Elder) in the PC (USA).
A second-career pastor who received her Masters of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, she began serving as Interim Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Ft. Walton Beach in late November 2011. Sharon loves preaching, teaching, and meeting new people.
She serves on the Presbytery Leadership Team of Florida Presbytery and will be installed as Moderator of the Presbytery in January 2019. Sharon serves as the Synod of South Atlantic as a member of the Permanent Judicial Commission.
Sharon enjoys walking, reading, crochet and counted cross-stitch, and crafts. She and her husband, John, who is certified as a Commissioned Lay Pastor, have 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
Sharon believes that God engages people through history, events, and personal relationships. Her favorite quote is from the author Frederick Buechner: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Her favorite Bible passage is Romans 8:31-39 “[Nothing] in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Jackie Hails Director of Music, Organist, and Pianist E-mail Jackie Hails
Jackie Hails, Director of Music, Organist, and Pianist, is a native of Northwest Florida and has been on the staff at FPC since January, 2000. A graduate of Niceville High School, she received the Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She taught elementary music, junior high chorus, and senior high chorus in Okaloosa County, Florida, public schools for 30 years until her retirement in 2005. The majority of her career (22 years) was spent as choral director at Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach. The daughter of a Southern Baptist Pastor, she has served churches in Florida, Missouri, and Louisiana as organist/pianist/accompanist/choir director since the age of 15. She conducts the Sanctuary Choir, Handbell Choir, and is a member of the Worship Team.
